If you happen to work in the headquarters of Slovakia’s biggest bank Slovenska Sporitelna in Bratislava, you’re a lucky person. But even if you don’t, it’s still worth the trip! I’m talking about the peculiar place located just next to it. Freshmarket is very different from a typical supermarket. Instead of the uniform selling surface, you’ll be surrounded by a multitude of cute little shops and bistros. And this is Freshmarket- a bunch of passionate businessmen that decided to do business differently.
You can meet the super-efficient lady that runs an Italian salad bar and will serve you a perfect generous lunch in half a second. Or the dressed-up personnel of a Turkish bistro, that will make you a delicious fresh spinach and cheese “pide” (an eye-shaped Turkish pizza) and one of the best kebab in the city. Almost everything is take-away, so you can grab your lunch and enjoy it near the Kuchajda lake.
If not possible during the week, I still try to visit Freshmarket over the weekend for my Saturday shopping. Farmers’ fruits and vegetables, Italian cheeses and pasta, Slovak milk specialties, bakery products, ingredients for oriental cuisine, organic food, fresh meat, honey, wine, Hungarian specialties – at Freshmarket you can find everything that you cannot find elsewhere.
You may also like to visit the Yeme supermarket that is just a few steps away, where you can find high-quality and bio food at still reasonable prices.
