Ice cream gets really popular in Bratislava during the summer months. As soon as the warm weather comes in late spring, the city gets filled with numerous seasonal ice cream stands. Some establishments with proven quality however remain stable and local customers are waiting for their new season openings each year.
I cannot help it, but in Bratislava’s Old Town, where most of them are concentrated, there is only one that I truly love, and that is Koun. Although it’s the most hidden one, and you are less likely to spot it just passing by, during the top season you may notice it thanks to the long queue of locals forming in front of it. At such times you can easily wait up to half an hour to get your ice cream, but trust me, it’s worth it. Or you can just be smart and come outside the most popular afternoon hours and thus avoid queues.
The place is run by a lady who learned the art of authentic gelato directly in Italy and brought the expertise here in Bratislava. This is what makes it different from other ice-cream shops – you can really feel that the ice cream is made of natural ingredients only and your tasting experience won’t be ruined by any artificial flavourings. The daily offer changes each day and you can read it on the table in front of the shop. The flavours are sometimes quite exotic, but I just love discovering them!
