Cement Truck Brussels

Not your average piece of art

""Cement Truck" by Wim Delvoye is a unique piece that's a scaled-down model of a cement truck constructed in the Flemish Baroque style. An ode to opposites!"

Cement Truck by Wim Delvoye is a unique piece of architecture located in the center of Brussels, really close to Place Saint-Catherine. The artwork is a typical example of how the Belgian artist Wim Delvoye likes to make art: he uses pieces of laser-cut stainless steel typically used in construction. The forms are a clear reference to the 17th-century Flemish Baroque style. The Cement Truck is a scaled-down model of a real cement truck. It can be found in a green, leafy street with a pond and is surrounded by benches to sit on. This is a very calm spot in the city center.

Amazingly crafted from said laser-cut stainless steel, the cement truck captures both the rugged nature of the vehicle and the architectural delicacy and grandeur that inspires its shape, exactly what Delvoye's work is famous for: the nature of the opposition. Wim Delvoye is one of the most controversial yet very interesting contemporary artists running nowadays and, in its scaled-down form, cement truck captures flawlessly the artist's private mantra and his dedication to beauty.

The cement truck is definitely worth a visit when strolling through Brussels. As it's located in the open air, it's obviously free. You can just pass by and have a look or you can stay and have a seat in the green and calm area for a while. The artist's other works are also definitely worth seeing!
