Saint Gilles is one of the nineteen municipalities located in the Brussels capital region. It’s located south of the city center of Brussels and is a neighborhood with a very diverse population.
Located a bit higher than “la barrière de St. Gilles”, which was one of the entrances of Obbrussels back in the day, you can find Place van Meenen with the beautiful town house of St. Gilles.
It think it’s the second most beautiful town hall of all of the Brussels municipalities. (The one at Brussels market is the prettiest without a doubt).
The best moment to visit Place van Meenen is Monday, when the Place hosts the (evening) market.
Especially during summer, a lot of people who live around the neighborhood come down to do their (grocery) shopping and end up with some friends, colleagues of neighbors around a table filled with local food and drinks. The market has a corner dedicated to food truck and apero counters where you can order something to drink and nibble.
It is a weekly event and actually the perfect spot to start your week if you want to relax and meet the community.
Around Place van Meenen there are a lot of nice little cafés, restaurants and cocktail and wine bars. You can choose between typical Belgian food, Lebanese food or delicious pizza within 150 meters.
