A dance of colourful lights in a midsummer night, lost in the city park, surrounded by friends and cheerful people… Kertem means “my garden”, but to me it’s also a synonym of summer, as this beer garden is irreplaceable for me in my favorite season. Kertem is the biggest hangout in Városliget in Budapest, the City Park. It’s in a vast green field, offering beverages and Balkan food until late at night.
I just love the Hungarian way of lighting up spaces with multicoloured bulb lights and Kertem matches this sparkle with painted chairs in primary colours. It’s a popular get-together for the locals, that few tourists get to know. The most impressive aspect of Kertem to me lies in the endurance and flexibility of the managers. The City Park is undergoing a big construction project to create a Museum Quarter. As a part of the plan, Kertem was forced to abandon its original location, which was closer to the Palace of Ice. It popped up the following season by a historical building of the park, a few meters away. In 2018 that structure was tore down to build a new one. Did Kertem disappear? Luckily for its loyal community, it found a third spot to provide the perfect summery location to the people of Pest.
To me, Kertem is something to look forward to in the cold months, a fairytale with a Mediterranean touch.
