The new summer hit to enjoy the majestic Danube in Budapest is called Valyo Kikötő! There is no other place I feel like going to since I found out about this new spot on the Pest side, south of the city-center (still very much in the center: you can hop on a city boat -see the related article- to reach it, bike along the Danube, or take the Hév).
Here time slows down, you feel you can almost connect with anyone who’s here, even if they are total strangers!
Actually, it’s no wonder, since Valyo is a citizen’s initiative, led by a collective of “Danube activists” who want Budapest residents to feel in symbiosis with their river. They managed to rent that run-down place by the Rákóczi bridge and turned it into a wonderful open-air meeting place with all sorts of free activities for adults and kids, including yoga! The same guys also make the Liberty bridge pedestrian on the week-end during the summer.
But Valyo kikötő is also a bar. So get yourself a good beer or a fröccs (spritzer) and take a seat facing the Danube. Then just relax, think of how nice the sunset can be on the river and deep into the city’s twilight. If you feel like it, groove on some techno vibes or enjoy the live music on the open-air dance-floor/stage. And for your hungry stomach get a “balkanik” hotdog, with ajar (pretty much the only food option so far but not bad!).
