I used to come to Vas utca to see plays performed by the students of the University of Theatre and Film Arts Budapest. Unfortunately, since the university's takeover in 2020, Ódry, the university’s theatre, no longer operates. Yet, there’s still something on this street that brings me back and fills me with warmth every time I’m there, a small, kind tapas bar called Vas Manci.
Vas Manci is a one-woman business with a very recognizable character that shines through in both its atmosphere and its thoughtfully selected dishes and drinks. The place feels homey and personal. The kind, where I bet most details have a story. I like to sit by the large windows, looking out onto the street and across to the old building of Ódry.
Most of the dishes are prepared freshly right there. Anything you pick from the menu is original, tasty, full of heart and very satisfying. It gives me the impression of being over at someone’s place, enjoying an exceptional homemade food while gazing out at a classic Pest side street.
Vas Manci is a wonderful place to take a break from the hustle and to enjoy an uninterrupted conversation with friends or a date.
Watch out, they’re open only on weekday afternoons after 16 p.m.
