Located on a small side street near the Canadian Embassy, Ful Mahrous in Garden City is a small kiosk with tables spread out in the street. Ful is a traditional meal all Egyptians eat. It can be breakfast meal or dinner — it’s an essential food in Egypt. I have become an expert of eating this famous dish. I’ve tried most ful restaurants & local carts in the street. My pleasure is immeasurable when I hang out with friends & go eat from a local cart. Or I sit in the street and start my journey with a dish full of ful, salad & fried potatoes. I adore it. I don’t really have these feelings unless I’m in Mahrous, which has the best ful in Cairo.
Ordering ful for beginners is not a big deal — the choices are few & easy. Once you have found your favorite flavor, you will not change it. You have a choice of five different types of foul – iskandary with onions, tomatoes, peppers and tehina, ful with salsa (a tomato paste mixture), spicy ful with shatta (chilli powder) and hot oil, ful with butter (a real test for your digestive system), and just plain ful with nothing added but a bit of salt. You can also order an omelette if you’re interested.
All meals are served with salad & bread. Mahrous is unforgettable experience to feel like a local.
