Au Cheval is, as I like to say, “one classy joint.” This Chicago West Loop neighborhood gem serves up delicious, but refined diner food. I know… who knew that was even possible? There are over 30 beers on tap, great cocktails & a decadent menu of upscale greasy spoon options. This is a great place to meet for lunch or dinner, as well as brunch on the weekends.
If you’re a fan of lunch meat or even if you’re not, the bologna sandwich is just delightful. Their house-cured bologna is piled high on a warm bun and topped with a cheesy sauce to create the ultimate comfort food experience (pictured). I never liked bologna as a kid, but this grown up version changed my mind at first bite.
If there was a must try item on the menu it’s the burger. It’s not outrageous or fancy, but it is pretty darn good and has made it onto several top burger lists for Chicago. It’s so popular they have opened a few fast casual restaurants called Small Cheval in a few other neighborhoods in the city to serve up their famous burgers, along with some tasty shakes.
The atmosphere is cozy and inviting with a sleek bar, charming booths and petite tables to get cozy with your group or date. Wait times depending on the time of day or day of the week can be long, so put your name down and head to Lone Wolf to grab a drink while you wait.
