Au Cheval is, as I like to say, “one classy joint.” This west Loop gem serves up delicious, but refined diner food. I know… who knew that was even possible? There are over 30 beers on tap, fantastic cocktails and fabulous menu of options. This is a great place to meet for dinner or brunch on the weekend.
If you’re a fan of lunch meat or even if you’re not, the bologna sandwich is delightful. Their house-cured bologna is piled high on a warm bun and topped with a cheesy sauce to create the ultimate comfort food experience (pictured). I never liked bologna as a kid, but this grown up version changed my mind at first bite.
If there was a must try item on the menu it’s the burger. It’s not outrageous or fancy, but it is pretty darn good and has made it onto several top burger lists for Chicago. It’s so popular they opened Small Cheval in Wicker Park to serve up just burgers and shakes. They also serve up this bad boy at 3 Greens Market.
The atmosphere is cozy and inviting with a sleek bar, charming booths by the windows and petite tables in the back. The employees are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable of the menu and I have always felt welcomed, is that a thing? They just hire some pretty stellar folks in my opinion.
