Tacos are my favorite food so I’m always searching for great, authentic ones. If you like carne asada (steak) tacos, then L’ Patron in Logan Square is where you want to go. It is not fancy but most good taco joints are not. One way you know that it’s good, is that the line typically extends out the door. For this reason, I usually call ahead and place my order over the phone for pickup. The steak tacos are cheap (~$2), served ‘con copia’ (two shells) with onion and cilantro.
The restaurant was started by a group of brothers – one of whom worked with the world famous Rick Bayless at Topolobampo. When you bite into the steak taco, you first notice the great texture – it is a bit crunchy from being charred. Next you’ll notice the flavor, which is wonderful. In my opinion, L’ Patron has the best steak tacos in Chicago. When I go, I usually get ten tacos; four to eat that night and then three to take to work the next two days. My wife loves the ‘gringa’ which is similar to a meat and cheese quesadilla, described as “the perfect combination for marinated steak and gooey cheese.” Also, be sure to ask for their pickled vegetables, which include peppers, carrots, onions and cauliflower. They are free but not always available because they quickly run out of them. Also, keep in mind that L’ Patron is cash only – but they do have an ATM inside.
