Montrose Beach – Legal kiting

I bet you didn’t know that it’s illegal to fly a kite in Chicago. Weird, I know. An alderman once tried to overturn this law but he was promptly told to “go fly a kite”. One place where you may legally fly a kite is at Montrose Beach and on the grassy knoll nearby. Sometimes you can catch kitesurfers out on the water doing their thing.

I like to come here to fly my 3.5m kite. The beach is massive and a really good place to learn how to kite. If you don’t like sand there is a grassy knoll just a walk away from the beach where you can use the extra elevation to your advantage.

There is a harbor close to this beach for watching boats float at the docks. There is also a dog beach at the northern end of this beach. I hear that there is a taco joint that opens in the summer too but I’ve never seen it open for business.
