My favorite place to enjoy shrimp tacos in the city is under the canopy lights on the patio at The Gringo. This newly opened restaurant joins the ranks of hipster bars in Chicago’s West Town neighborhood. Unlike most over-priced trendy new spots in the area, Gringo offers reasonably priced food and drinks to be enjoyed in a lively and inviting atmosphere.
Featuring a concession stand-styled bar with a red-and-white striped canopy and picnic bench seating, the outdoor patio gives off a comfortable “backyard barbecue” feel, making it the perfect spot to enjoy the city’s warm summer nights.
Aside from adding a comfortable feel to the space, the picnic benches serve as tabletops to the best shrimp tacos in the city. After my first bite, they instantly shot to the top of my list of favorites. The tortilla was piled high with a good portion of shrimp – all of which were plump, juicy and cooked to perfection.
As far as drinks go, my favorite is the Summer Cooler ($10), which blends watermelon, cucumber, mint, soda and vodka for a light, refreshing cocktail. The spicy margarita ($8.50) is also a fan favorite, offering the authentic spicy kick of flavor that Mexican food is known for.
The delicious food and neighborhood-style atmosphere can be enjoyed indoors as well. Across from the indoor bar, a long picnic-style bench lines the entire wall, putting diners in close quarters with one another, bringing the patio’s friendly atmosphere indoors for a great dining experience, rain or shine.
