For people who have traveled to Spain, it can be hard to find authentic Spanish tapas anywhere else in the world. Spanish tapas lovers – you are in luck, because The Spanish Square has the most traditional Spanish-style meals in Chicago. While it looks rather unassuming from the outside (I admittedly walked by this place nearly every day for the last year before finally giving it a try), the inside is tastefully decorated with a modern, Spanish flair. There’s a small ‘bodega’ in the back where you can buy the fresh meats and cheeses that the chefs use in case you want to replicate your favorite meals at home.
My boyfriend (fellow foodie) and I tried this place on a Wednesday night. We’re glad we made a reservation because the place was packed with locals from the surrounding Lakeview neighborhood. Our waitress noted they get quite a few regulars due to their popular specials like half price bottles of wine or wine tastings.
Like at any tapas restaurants, I recommend picking a selection of plates such as the calamares fritos and the patatas bravas. Our waitress also mentioned that the bacon wrapped dates is one of the most popular dishes, so meat eaters, please give this dish a try for me. Arriving super hungry, we ordered five dishes for the two of us and left with full stomachs.
Definitely give this place a try if you are looking to go to Spain without the jet lag.
