I am normally not a very sweet dessert person — but churros are the exception. Chicago’s Pilsen community is known for its plethora of Mexican eateries. Amidst taco shops, those with a sweet tooth will delight in freshly made churros at Don Churro.

Don Churro is one of the only bakeries in the neighborhood, and the only non-chain churro shop in Pilsen. For those who have never had one, a churro is a deep-fried pastry made from flour and coated in sugar. The origins are unknown, but most believe they were invented by Spaniards.

I often bring my food tours here as one of our last stops; visitors can choose from flavors such as chocolate, caramel, bavarian cream, strawberry, or plain. Churros are given out in a little paper bag, still warm from being housed in a heated glass case beside the cashier counter.

My favorite is definitely chocolate — but to each their own! Super churro lovers can also buy a box of frozen churros to take home and enjoy.

Note that Don Churro is cash-only.
