If you’re into Indian food – especially South Indian – Chennai Chef is a spot you don’t want to miss. Located on the busy Amsterdamer Straße, this small eatery doesn’t look particularly special from the outside. Once you step inside, you might briefly wonder if you’ve walked into one of Cologne’s many little Büdchen (kiosks) instead of a restaurant.
But don’t be fooled by its modest appearance. Inside, you’ll find a bustling little place that’s become my absolute go-to for Indian food in Cologne. The menu is packed with flavorful dishes, and everything I’ve tried so far has been delicious.
My boyfriend likes to explore the different curries and always orders parotta – a flaky, layered flatbread that’s perfect for scooping up sauces. I, on the other hand, stay loyal to my favorite: the Mysore Masala Dosa. It’s a crispy crepe made from rice and lentil flour, filled with a mildly spicy mashed potato mix, and served with tangy chutneys on the side. I always wash it down with a spicy cumin lassi. That combo has never disappointed me.
Chennai Chef may be small, but it has a big fanbase – so if you’re planning to go for dinner, it’s worth considering a reservation.
