Hins & Kunzt – Sustainable neighbourhood atelier

Hins und Kunzt is an award-winning local initiative in Sülz. The unspectacular garage backyard has become a sustainability center for the neighborhood. In addition to workshop space at a really small rent for regular classes and events or just for a special occasion, the place has excelled with a larger and larger number of sustainable services.

Practically everything is collected here and either swapped, given to a good cause, upcycled or recycled: Books, clothes, pens, bottle caps, corks, old cables, CDs and printer cartridges. My personal highlight is the “Dingsbums” shelf: when I moved away from the neighbourhood last year, I regularly sorted things out and brought them here. However, since I’m a hunter and gatherer, I also kept finding little treasures that came with me to my new place.

What I also find super useful and sustainable is the rental of things you rarely need – like tools, machines, gardening equipment or cargo bikes. Besides, Hins und Kunzt participates in the “Edible City” initiative with its own planting activities and plant swap meetings.
The latest addition is a distribution point of “The Good Food” in the backyard. For a small donation, you can purchase food that has passed its best-before date. Too bad I don’t live around the corner anymore, but I still like to drop by from time to time.
