Amazon? Who? This bookstore represents what bookstores are meant to be, if you ask me. It has been around for more than 175 years – and will be for a lot more to come.
Hildegund Laaf is Cologne’s oldest bookseller – a job she’s been doing for more than 60 years now. You can almost feel her love for literature when you enter the store.
The selection of books is very thoughtful. You can find classics (they have the complete Manesse library in stock) and their special editions (Hildegund Laaf is especially passionate about Proust) as well as compilations of books according to current cultural topics. But unlike bigger bookstore chains, controversy is not a decisive factor for a book to be selected and presented here. The range of travel guides and travel literature is also huge.
The thoughtfulness and knowledge that is put into the selection and representation of the art of literature is one of many reasons the Lengenfeld’sche Buchhandlung was awarded the German bookstore prize of 2017. This place is an oasis for everyone who craves for the true spirit of great literature.
