With the summer holidays moving into gear, Islands Brygge’s harbor front transforms into one of Copenhagen’s favorite playgrounds with a mix of beach volley, fearless skateboarders and the odd traceur going through their Parkour motions. The queues growing outside this harbor front’s cafés, bistros and delicatessens indicate how popular this neighborhood has become. Islands Brygge became one delicatessen richer with the opening of Egils Deli. This former bakery has been lovingly converted by the joint owner, restaurateur and designer, Julie Stokholm, whose passion for Mediterranean cuisine is obvious as she guides me through her latest project.
Julie is clearly committed to enriching her local hood, with a delicatessen providing visiting urban picnic dwellers a range of Spanish smoked hams and a selection of cheeses that Le Marais in Paris would be proud of.
Egils Deli derives its name from one of Islands Brygge’s central streets, again reflecting Julie’s affection for this neighborhood. For a vegetarian with a cheese allergy entering Egil Deli’s universe was something of a challenge, but the visual experience of this special delicatessen and Julie’s contagious enthusiasm for introducing Mediterranean food products to this part of Copenhagen was very persuasive.
