The last time I was in New York I found a shop that rivalled Aha Ha ha. But not every city has an emporium selling everything from fart cushions, to fake poo (or jobbies as we call them) to stink bombs, to magic tricks, to Wonder Woman costumes – and right in the beating heart of its ‘Centro Historic’. In fact it’s arguably situated in one of Edinburgh’s most photogenic cobbled streets, Victoria Street (a.k.a. West Bow).
(Interesting but fairly useless fact. I discovered recently, from a Belgian friend, that cobbles are known there as kinderkoppen – children’s heads.)
Even from the outside with its fake glasses/big nose frontage, visiting this store is a visitor experience in itself, and you’ll while away quite a few moments trying on daft wigs and guffawing at some of the frankly questionable stock items.
After you’ve been to Aha Ha Ha take in some of the other magic of Victoria Street/West Bow; such as Oink, The Bow Bar and Demijohn.
Edinburgh’s brilliantly named home of the joke is thriving and has for many years. And its sister shop, Hi Jinks, round the corner in the Grassmarket, can add an extra dimension to your visit (especially a festive one) with their high quality costume selection.
This Facebook review highlights why a trip to Edinburgh isn’t just for the holidays…
“We come to Edinburgh every summer and get our costumes and gifts from both shops. We were a hit in our Key West Fantasy Fest Neighborhood March.”
