Edinburgh-famous company Boda is a Scandinavian-style mini-chain with bars and restaurants scattered around different areas of the city. But the biggest, possibly most well-known one is Akva: a Sweden-inspired restaurant, bar and venue with a large outside seating area right on the Union Canal. Its menu, although largely dictated by Swedish recipes, has something for everyone. From its morning coffee and pastries to its evening meatball-inspired menu, Akva is open all day long. I particularly enjoy coming here in the summer, when the outside terrace is really put to good use, and often catches the sun for hours a day. Even in the winter, however, on a nice day, there is a box filled with blankets for you to use if you’re feeling brave!
Akva is also the perfect place for large groups and events, with an upstairs bar space perfect for birthdays, staff parties and more. At the weekend, a DJ plays, while during the week there is always a good selection of themed evenings to suit anyone and everyone.
