If you are looking for great quality simple food, try Bell’s Diner in Stockbridge. It’s menu is American diner style, but the restaurant is almost like an old coffee shop – all odd wooden tables and chairs.
Although their menu covers all three courses, mains and milkshakes is why it is one of my Edinburgh favourites. For your main course there are essentially two options (at least in my mind) of burgers or steaks. First, choose which you prefer and what size you would like. Second, choose your toppings. There is a range of sauces on offer for your steak – for example, mustard, garlic or, my favourite, peppercorn.
There is also a range of options for the burgers – roquefort and bacon is one of the interesting ones. On the drink front there is a small selection of wines and beers, but I personally I like to have a malt milkshake with my burger.
There are only seven or so tables, so it can get very busy, especially at the weekends, so make a reservation if you can. If you do end up having to wait for a while for your table, grab a quick drink at the Bailie Bar opposite.
