The Counter on the Canal is a cute blue canal barge that has been brought back to life as a floating coffee shop located at the Edinburgh end of the Edinburgh – Glasgow Union Canal.
The owners use a blend of Sumatran and Brazilian beans to create a cracking coffee in all the usual variations. The also bake a great selection of tray-bakes and cakes in the boats tiny kitchen.
People probably don’t think of canals when they think of Edinburgh but back in the 1800’s the canal between Edinburgh and Glasgow was the motorway of its day. After years of neglect it is now fully back to life as recreational space and home to a few canal boat residences.
I use it as part of the cycle network to get to the countryside a few miles from the city centre. If you have five hours to spare, load up with caffeine at The Counter and cycle to Glasgow on the 54 miles of canal path. If you are looking for something a bit less strenuous, take a break from the city centre and chill with the ducks by the canal.
