My favourite walk is along the Arno in the southern direction from Florence. Starting from the city center the first bit is quite close to the road, but the further you go, the greener and quieter it gets. Sometimes I go all the way to this little village called Il Girone, but then we’re talking of a two hour walk. Not wanting to go quite that far, or on the way out or coming back, there’s a nice little bar/kiosk right by the river. It’s called Chiosco il Tempio and I’d say it’s not more than a 20 minute walk from Ponte Veccio. Nothing fancy or modern. Self service and plastic tables but there’s a peacefulness and a beautiful, close-by view of the river.
People pass by on foot, walking their dogs or riding their bikes. It’s lively, but over the bar lies a sense of calm and it’s as if there’s an invisible wall, separating it from the city’s noise. For me there’s no better spot to read the newspaper over a cappuccino in the morning or have a laid-back Spritz in the afternoon, and for the more active guests there’s the good old football game and pingpong table to stay entertained!
