On May 3rd, Fabbrica Europa opened its 26th edition of annual dance, theater and music and performance festival in Florence. From then until mid July, there are more than fifty performances to see in various locations in and around the city.
The main venues are Stazione Leopolda, Teatro della Pergola, Teatro Cantiere Florida, and the newly inaugurated PARC Performing Arts Research Centre. In addition there are many performances in less-conventional spaces, such as Santa Croce and Santa Maria Novella.
The festival hosts an eclectic mix of touring productions. As far as dance goes, you may see performances from renowned professional dance companies, as well as smaller local companies and works from new choreographers.
On the music front, there is also a wide selection of concerts featuring experimental sounds, ranging from classical to electronic, with much in between. My favorite venues have been at the Teatro Maggio Fiorentino and at the Limonaia di Villa Strozzi, at the top of the magnificent park.
A special highlight of this years edition is the newly inaugurated space, PARC Performing Arts Research Centre, which has just been taken over by the organization of Fabbrica Europa. The space functions as both a rehearsal studio and workshop space for movement-based practices and as a performance venue, with a new bar, offering pre-performance aperitivos and post-show drinks. The bar’s generous patio is a lovely place to gather on the occasion of a show on a summer night.
