For those looking for live outdoor concerts this summer, this one is for you! From the 10th to the 12th of July, Florence will host the 9th edition of the Festival au Désert, a multicultural exchange of contemporary creations from Africa, the Mediterranean and Europe. Last year, I arrived to the festival with no idea what to expect. As a fist timer, I was so pleasantly surprised and actually amazed that the events were free.
Music and sound experimentation is the main focus of the festival, though there are also other elements that cause for a truly enjoyable setting. Last year, in addition to great music, the Ethiopian apericena (dinner) was a definite highlight. The festival takes place at various locations around Florence, including the Manifattura Tabacchi, Le Murate, and the “beach” along the Arno. These are all outdoor settings, which means, no matter what event you attend, there will be room to spread out and enjoy the atmosphere. You can sit, lay down, stand, or dance, as you wish. My advice would be to bring a picnic blanket, to sit back and enjoy the soundscape.
