An unexpected world of curiosities awaits you at this tiny downtown store called “Last Century Modern”. Lovers of gadgets and toys from the past will enjoy their collection of tin toys, music boxes, comics, sculptures, maps, perfumes and posters. I enjoy roaming around the store and discovering new little items that tease a smile out of me.
What I love about Last Century Modern is the regularly changing window display, which is unfailingly entertaining. They recently changed the large solar system mobilee and now show several Belgian Tintin items, such as bags, pillows and comics.
Also, take a close look at the photo above: had you noticed the little sprayed banana on the left corner, next to the entrance of the shop? It’s the signature graffiti of Thomas Baumgärtel, a famous German street art artist, who marks the world’s most interesting galleries and art venues with the sprayed banana. Last Century Modern is not a gallery, but it is located very close to the Museum of Modern Art and given its curious and creative items and design, this shop definitely deserves its yellow sprayed banana.
