The Plaine de Plainpalais hosts many pieces of art, but most of them are not easy to see, maybe because it is the largest square in Geneva. The free app and website “Art sans RDV” has been developed to help us find and know more about it and enjoy the meeting of art and urban space.
With the app, you can walk around the square and if you are near an artwork, a video comment will be available to inform you about the art and the urban space. These comments are unfortunately only available in French at the moment but the map shows you around twenty spots and gives you basic information like the title, the artist’s name, the date of creation and the context.
One of the most famous artworks is “Alter ego” at the tram stop Plainpalais, which consists of four figures of bronze which amazingly look like a real person. Even I, someone who grew up in Geneva, sometimes have the impression that they are alive and say “excuse me” to the walking woman!
I especially appreciate the light installations all around the square on the top of buildings. Each installation is contemporary and is an invitation to think about its message.
And for the foodies, don’t miss the market, which always displays its eatable “still live” works (aka food products 😉 )
