The food truck scene rolled into Geneva pretty late in the game, but we now have a handful of trucks scattered across the city. Funky BBQ is one among them, blaring the dinner bell to BBQ lovers far and wide. This is a daring initiative: Genevans are not ones for strong flavors, large portions, or making a mess – arguably the three basic tenets of BBQ. As long time American residents of Geneva though, the folks behind Funky BBQ are in the right position to strike the balance of smoke, spice and tang for a Geneva audience.
So how do these ambassadors of southern funk do? The ribs are normally beautifully tender, with a gentle BBQ aroma and not too smokey. If you want a bit more kick, the Funky bunch have a solution for you: as part of their “BBQ and sauces for all” strategy, they let the customer pick their level of piquant by offering a range of sauces, from Kansas City to Dead Pig. I took the Kansas City sauce (being a little spice sensitive myself), and I absolutely loved its tang. If you’re looking for something easier to eat, the pulled pork sandwiches are just right for a medium appetite, and the creamy mac and cheese and slaw will take you back to the southern US – even if you’ve never been there before.
