A market in the evening: this is a nice concept. When wine and cheese are the main attraction it becomes a success story. This is the story of the Marché des Grottes, 2 minutes walking from Geneva main station.
Every Thursday from 16:30 to 20:30 the Place des Grottes is surrounded by stands with local vegetables, bread, flour, cheese and wine in a friendly atmosphere. Little by little the square becomes crowded with groups of friends and colleagues. They mainly meet up there to chat over a glass of wine from the Domaine de la Devinière and a cheese platter, or in the summertime delicious sausages from the butcher’s barbecue.
I like choosing the cheese for my platter from the amazing selection offered by the stands. Which one will match my wine? Pecorino with truffle, creamy Gorgonzola, or Alps’ cheese? So far I have never been disappointed, or rather the opposite: I am now convinced that cheese and wine make a nice couple (even if it can be expensive)!
I also recommend the delicious sourdough bread to go with your cheese or for tomorrow’s breakfast or picnic.
