Eeeeeeveryone likes pizza (if not: I’m shocked, stop reading). It’s the perfect comfort food. Not the frozen ones (unless you are a student then I understand) but a real classic, fresh-from-the-oven pizza. I tried a lot of them in Ghent from the cheap ones to the ones in high end restaurants. But none of them were really special. After years of eating margaritas and becoming a foodie, Ghent had become boring at that point and I was tired of the same old.
Someone must have read my mind because suddenly everyone was talking about a new restaurant in town with the best pizzas. At first, I wasn’t interested: pizzeria nr 200 had opened. But then I saw a picture of someone’s pizza at Otomat. It didn’t even look like a pizza. That is because of the ingredients. They don’t put the classic toppings like four cheeses or pepperoni. Instead they make heavenly pizzas with for example pear and blue cheese, asparagus and more, depending on the season. They are very creative.
Even the dough is unique. It’s made with beer! A famous pizza chef created the dough for this restaurant. Don’t worry this pizza won’t get you drunk. If you do want to get drunk though, they have a large menu of craft beers.
Otomat has existed since 2017 and it is still as popular with the locals as when it opened. There is no doubt that these are the best pizzas (in Ghent).
