Throughout the 19th century, every neighbourhood in Ghent used to organize its own proper festivities every Sunday, during which Belgian beer would flow in abundance. However, in 1843, the Municipality decided to unite all festivities into one single “General Fair”: thus the Ghent Festivities were born.
After 175 years, our beloved Ghent Festivities have developed into one of the largest open air cultural festivals of Europe. For ten days, there is free music on 10 different squares, animation for children at various locations in the historical heart of the city and hundreds of indoor and outdoor activities. Just to give you an idea of the size: the overall surface of the Ghent Festivities is about 765,000 m². In the past years we welcomed more than 1.7 million visitors from all over the world!
If you fancy an urban festival, a cultural event or you are just fan of large-scale events, then you better be there. Do it like a real Ghentian: dance your way into the night, meet new people from all over the world and enjoy the unique atmosphere of the historical city of Ghent. Just keep on going, cause here we say: “nie neute, nie pleuje” (don’t whine, don’t give up).
This year: July 13th – 22nd.
