The Alpen Lodge is located right across the road from Glasgow Central Station. The exterior has a warm, inviting alpine lodge look to it and this continues on the inside. It is a tiny, cosy bar with few seats but you won’t be scared off by the friendly bar staff and clientele.
Inside the bar you’ll find hundreds of trinkets that deserve to be in a Scottish Bar museum as some of the items look to date back over 50 years. The Alpen Lodge opened in 1970 and prior to becoming a pub it was a tobacconist’s.
This is a personal favourite of mine as I love a cosy bar and is perfect for a quick pint before your train home from a shift at work. It is also a great spot to meet friends if you are all coming from different directions. In days gone by this used to be a haven for metalheads but those days are by now and you are more likely to hear Golden Oldies on the jukebox. I enjoy just wasting 30 minutes in here between train journeys.
The Alpen Lodge hosts weekly live shows with local musicians and pours a particularly good pint of Tennent’s.
