The urge to have a cup of coffee can strike at any point while exploring the city. If you are at the Senaatintori (Senate Square), there’s one place that I really love; Cafe Engel. It’s right at the square so you can’t really find a better location for a moment of relaxation. The view from the cafe is pretty cool, the cathedral.
A quick history lesson: the cathedral, like almost everything else on the square, was designed by Carl Ludvig Engel. Thus the name for the cafe. And while you are at the Senate Square, you should also visit the cathedral.
Naturally, because of the location, there is a steady stream of customers at the cafe. You’re bound to see fellow travellers, but I can assure you that us locals also visit the cafe often. The downside is that it’s of course a bit pricy.
You can have a pretty good breakfast at the cafe or enjoy a delicious piece of cake or pie with your coffee. And of course try to get a window table, because that’s part of the appeal. The old building itself is pretty too, so you are in for a treat anyway. The cakes aren’t exactly cheap, but lunch for example is pretty reasonal.
