One block uphill from the Orion film archive you can find the legendary Corona Baari & Biljardi. Established in the early 90s’ by the eccentric Kaurismäki filmmaker brothers, the bar has naturally evolved into the (un)official hangout for the Helsinki film people and anyone who’s just in need of a relaxed evening.
To give a local touch to Corona’s New York street bar decor with high metal stools rounding up the bar, there are art works from the Kaurismäki brothers’ films and of their friends.
You might not notice it at first but behind the large bar, most of the place is filled with pool and snooker tables. I’ve heard that the tables are suited even for professional tastes, and once it’s your turn you can play as long as you like. If you get hungry while playing, try out the grilled cheese sandwiches.
If the heavy red curtains are drawn open, take a look downstairs to see what’s going on at the jazzy-looking Dubrovnik Lounge & Lobby. Or if there’s a film festival going on, catch a film at the Kino movie theater – because what else would there be in the cellar of a filmmaker brothers’ bar than a cinema?
