This is not the Madison Square Garden. It’s the Jäähalli. The Old Jäähalli or Helsinki Ice Hall, if you want to be accurate, a home for the HIFK hockey team. If it’s posh you’re after, then the Hartwall Arena will suit you better. The long standing rival Jokerit plays KHL-league games there. Here it’s all about blood, sweat and tears of the game of ice hockey, facilities, queues and seating. Just perfect.
I’m not a big fan of hockey nowadays, but as a kid I had a folder where I collected photos about HIFK and a jersey four sizes too big for a 10 year old. Good times.
Regular games during the season can be lame, if you are not a fan, but during the playoffs (late March and April) the atmosphere is very intense. And tickets are usually quickly sold out.
Jäähalli also hosts other events like concerts, ice skating shows and cheerleader competitions. You can check the schedule on their website, but it’s mostly in Finnish. So please try some of the local ticket sales and distribution companies for a better assortment.
And don’t wait too long to pay a visit. A plan for a new multi-super-duper-Helsinki-Garden has been announced. That would take all the action, games and shows of course, but let’s see when and if the plan rolls.
