Uh, a newbie in Helsinki’s bar scene and an instant favourite of mine!
Steampunk, unlike the name might lead you to think, does not really have anything to do with the classic thought of “punk” – it is a subculture genre that fusions fantasy and sci-fi elements along with styles from eg. the Victorian era. The “steam” part comes from the use of steam-powered machines that are often used in decor in relevant set-ups.
Steam Hellsinki is a recently opened bar entirely dedicated to this style and it’s a much appreciated alternative option to most bars in the city. The love for detail that has been put into decorating this place is astonishing. They play music that is apparently called “electro-swing” (also live sometimes!) – as I learnt – very fun and danceable and just the right fit for the remarkably mixed crowd that attended “Steam” when I visited. A place that lets go of stereotypes and welcomes everyone (that’s over 24, sorry youngsters) is so refreshing!
Drinks are delicious and mixed with care and the retro ambience is superb. On weekdays it tends to be a bit quieter, on weekends you might have to wait for a little while to get space (which tends to be annoying, but results in a well-managed occupancy – no unwanted cuddling on the dancefloor here).
No entrance but there’s a € 3 fee for the wardrobe.
