Makariivska church – The oldest wooden church

I think that the best spots to visit in another country are food markets and churches. These places can give you a good idea about local people, their culture and everyday life.

Ukraine is considered to be a very religious country, around 70% of Ukrainians claim to be Christians. We have lots of churches, however very few actually go there. Most families visit church twice a year – on Christmas and on Easter. My family has a tradition to go to church every Easter. Naturally, all churches in the city centre are very crowded on this day, there’s no place to park, you have to wait for an hour until the priest comes out, lots of people and noise.. overall not the best experience.

But several years ago we found Makariivska┬áchurch at Tatarka. Few actually know about its existence, the street where the church stands, Stara Polyana (Old Meadow) is very short, there are only a few houses there. Tatarka is a labyrinth of narrow winding streets and it is unlikely you’ll find this church just wandering around, you have to know it’s here.

I like it because it doesn’t look like most golden-domed churches in Kiev, it is the only wooden church in the city and it is more than 100 years old, which is not bad at all for a wooden building. Whether you are religious or not, you can come inside, light a candle and enjoy the peace.
