Truly a hidden gem of the Kiev bar scene, the Black Captain has been a mecca for the poor artists and students hanging out on Peyzazhna Alley for more than 10 years. Originally opened as a liquor store, it started selling alcohol by the glass, seeing the huge demand. With time the place evolved, losing the shelves and putting some tables instead. Now it’s more of a bar, which has some bottles behind the glass for decoration.
I have never walked into the Black Captain without meeting someone I know – poets, artists, TV people are the main part of the crowd. The place is as democratic as it could get – 8UAH for a shot of vodka makes it affordable for anyone. There is no sign, you can only notice the place by the black knight’s armor in the window. I highly recommend stopping by this place for a shot of Crimean Porto and taking a bottle of Ukrainian cider on your way to Peyzazhka.
