It is December already and guess what – Christmas is coming 😉 This time of the year is connected with something traditional – a Christmas Fair which takes place in the Main Market, between Sukiennice and St Mary’s Church. You must know that it is one of the best Christmas Markets in Europe, so if you’re in Krakow you need to visit it!
This year you can feel the Christmas mood till the 7th of January, and for me this mood is always connected with my favourite decorations in gold and red, also traditional handicrafts, local delicacies, Christmas gifts, stands with hand-painted bulbs and souvenirs, as well as jewelry, art glass and other trinkets. But it’s also the smell of mulled wine (or maybe the sulfur in it… ;-P) sold from giant wooden barrels, traditional grill dishes (mainly sausages and sheep’s cheese) and treats such as roasted nuts in caramel, marzipan products or traditional gingerbread.
This Christmas Fair, held during Advent, is an example of an old mercantile tradition. The idea of this special event during Christmas was established before WWII, and since a few years it’s become more and more popular among not only tourists but also citizens.
This event not only has a commercial purpose but also a cultural one, that’s why it’s accompanied by a rich artistic program like writing letters to Santa Claus (something for kids, but adults are also welcome), singing Christmas carols or a procession of Santa’s and colorful Krakow nativity scenes.
