If you look at this representative building, you can imagine that it must have played an important role in the Nowa Huta district. That’s true – it used to be the one of two cinemas in this area.
It was built in the early 50s, and it remained an important spot on New Huta’s cultural map. Cinema “Świt” was closed in 2002 and then the condition of the building got worse and worse. For many years the facade of the cinema was spoiled by hoardings. Finally, renovation works started… unfortunately at Tesco’s request.
The fact that a supermarket would be opened in that location, where previously New Huta had its cinema, was firstly shocking to the citizens of my district, but we gradually got used to the fact that our former cinema will now become a supermarket.
Thanks to the renovation the architecture and appearance of this place has returned to the glory of its heyday. Tesco has occupied the main hall of the building, however the smaller hall of the cinema has been adapted to hold a little cafe, which is called Filmowa. After climbing up the stairs on the right side of the entrance – you’ll enter Filmowa and see a representative of the building’s interior. Feel its sublime climate and soak up the atmosphere of this old cinema, pearl of socialist architecture.
