In the middle of Krakow’s Kazimierz, in its less visited corner, there is a place called Karakter. Although secluded and new, they have already gained quite a reputation with the local crowd – especially those seeking new experiences.
Karakter serves mostly well-known dishes (burgers, mussels, steak tartare…), but always with an unexpected modern twist. For instance, raw beef (or horse) can be served with mango, mussels with sourdough (‘żurek style’) and desserts can contain beetroot or goat cheese. Not to mention all the unusual dishes containing ingredients that you know separately, but somehow you have never placed them together on one plate.
Luckily, they do it tremendously well. Both the produce and the cooking process are of high quality, the service is professional and knows their menu inside out. Do dare to be brave with your choices. Very often their dishes are classics with a local twist, which gives a possibility of discovering plenty of new flavors. They also have very good wines in stock – you can browse through them individually or with the help of a sommelier.
All this might sound a bit high-brow, but it really is the opposite of that. The staff not very formal (albeit polite), the interior and ambiance is very much on the casual side, so feel free to come by and just as nonchalantly enjoy some good food and/or drinks and cocktails.
