Chernobyl Museum – Reminiscence of a disaster

Chernobyl is traditionally one of the main reasons why people want to visit Ukraine. For a long time this disaster was the only thing foreigners knew about our country. Our tourism industry keeps developing and what once was an exclusion zone is now a popular tourist destination. It is possible to visit the ghost towns of Chernobyl and Prypyat, see the nuclear power station and even spend a night in one of the abandoned hotels.

If you don’t plan to spend a fortune on a tour but would still like to learn something about this, you can visit Cheornobyl museum near Kontraktova square on Podil. For some reason not many people know about it.

Actually I wasn’t expecting much from this museum but surprisingly it really impressed me. The museum is located in the ex-fire station which took major part in eliminating the effects of the accident. There are two floors where you can find pictures, secret documents, video footage, dioramas recreating the events and a model of the Chernobyl nuclear plant power unit. Music and decorations add up to the overall atmosphere. The entrance fee is unbelievably cheap. I personally would charge more as it is very hard to find a museum like this in Kyiv.
