Zoloty Vorota Metro Station – Stunning decorations

Kiev’s metropolitan is full of records and interesting facts. Talking about my favorite station – it’s Zoloty Vorota (Golden Gates) station on the so-called Green Line. It is one of the most central stations, also one of the three transfer stations in Kiev. It was opened in 1989 and later got the State Prize of Ukraine in the Field of Architecture.

The history of Ukraine is reflected in the station’s architecture and it is directly associated with architecture and art of the Kievan Rus‘ era. At the beginning it was planned in Moscow in a typical Soviet style, but later, due to the economical and sociopolitical situation the plan was changed, thank God.

Recently, the station’s mosaics were listed as the “newly discovered objects of cultural heritage” by the city’s Department of Cultural Heritage. You’ll definitely enjoy these marvelous mosaic decorations, depicting the Princes of Kievan Rus, some notable figures from the Kievan Rus’ era, also a number of compositions with pictures of ancient Kiev’s churches.

The station is illuminated by numerous bronze chandeliers, so the style in general gives you an impression of either a castle or a Byzantine church. In January 2013 according to The Daily Telegraph this station was listed as one of the most beautiful in Europe.
