Running has become extremely popular in Lisbon. We’ve opted for an active lifestyle, while ditching the pricey subscriptions to gyms that we hardly ever get into – there are other ways! The word of mouth brought both young and new people to run, both for the physical challenge and as a way of socializing.
So, what are some the best places to run in Lisbon? As a rookie runner, I can list you my favorite ones:
First and foremost, the places near the river. The walk by the river in Belém (stretching out from the Belém Tower to Alcantara’s docks) is one of the most popular places, as well as the riverside area between Cais do Sodré and Santos. With such an inspiring view, who wouldn’t take advantage of that place to run and relax?
Also staying on the riverside, Parque das Nações is another sought after area for runners: large alleys and sidewalks, and a fantastic view of the river and the Vasco da Gama Bridge make me want to run more and more!
It’s also not hard to find other runners in Estádio Universitário de Lisboa (check the Estádio Universitário de Lisboa article) – despite the very different setting, in which a part of the running track has a view to one of the busiest roads in Lisbon, this stadium is a precious little oasis of calm in one of the most busy areas of the city.
So pick your running spot and… ready, set, go!
