No one who enters the Espiral Cafe in Lisbon for the first time expects to find what lies ahead at the end of the room when you turn the corner.
Known for the vegetarian restaurant downstairs that serves delicious and healthy food since 1978 and for the holistic and alternative therapies and conferences that it holds, Espiral also has an interesting alternative bookshop and a coffee shop at the front.
This last one is the one I’m talking about. The food and desserts served there come from the restaurant downstairs, and one of my regular sins for years has been the apple tart or the apple cake (but all desserts are good, really).
But the best thing is the little zen corner, almost fairy-like, art nouveau-inspired, indoor garden heaven, where you can relax, read a book or engage in an inspiring conversation with a friend, at the sound of a running water fountain.
It is a simple, calm and really beautiful place to stop by and have a little time out, while you breathe in the relaxed atmosphere.
In the winter is a perfect warm place to recharge, relax and, if it’s raining, enjoy listening to the falling drops outside.
The closest metro station is Saldanha (yellow line). Just walk down Av. Casal Ribeiro until the roundabout, turn left and you’re almost there!
