Principe Real Organic Market is another childhood weekly, and still is! Organic food production is not new in Portugal, but organized retail is quite a recent development. The first co-op was started in the late ’80s and slowly demand rose, until some 15 years ago (more or less) the decision to have a farmers market in town was made. Though very young, I was there! And what a great thing it is to have the farmers themselves come to Lisbon’s city centre and sell their fresh produce.
As an agriculture enthusiast and student, I love coming here, having good conversations with the farmers and envisioning a future where cities become more connected to their source of sustenance. With cities I mean people, the locals! So this is a great market for me and all consumers in Lisbon to buy from, thus supporting the resilience of organic farming.
Get there early in the morning; often a nice misty air hovers around the Principe Real garden and gives those huge Ficus trees a very mystical look.
