Just around the corner from Haggerston Rail Station, yet remarkably inconspicuous, Better Health is a bakery with a mission. It provides 12-week placements for adults recovering from mental health conditions, over the course of which trainees learn to make baked goods while slowly easing back into the world of work. You’ll see them kneading away in the open kitchen as soon as you enter the shop.
Head down on any weekday to choose from a delicious selection of homemade sandwiches, pastries, and sourdough loaves, or hold off until Friday when fresh Sicilian-style pizza is dished out at £6 a slice. Just make sure to head down on the early side because when it’s gone, it’s gone – and trust me, you don’t want to miss it!
Better Health Bakery operates as a takeaway only, but there are plenty of great picnic spots within walking distance. I’d recommend Stonebridge Gardens or London Fields.
