Spring is definitely a restaurant for special occasions. It's quite expensive (although considering the quality of food, service and ambience, actually good value). Anyone who you take (including yourself) will love you for it. Spring is a rare thing in London: grand, but calm, luxurious but simple, fancy but very friendly. Spring has long-term relationships with the farms that produce its produce and flowers, and a deep commitment to seasonality and quality.
This shows in the food. Fantastic combination of things you wouldn't imagine go together are elevated above their humble origins, perfectly combined and perfectly executed. We had a nibble of panisse (chickpea flour) in the form of straws, above a mixture of Gorgonzola cheese and organic honeycomb and walnuts. Bergamot gelato is creamy and rich while still tart and fresh. The freshest crab salad with painterly radicchio leaves. Innovative cocktails, a thoughtful wine list including English, German and Greek wines and plenty of non-alcoholic options, including a delicious apple soda.
When you come in, you enter an unassuming side entrance of the grand Somerset House building on the Thames (check what art exhibits are on, or in fine weather, have a drink on the terrace). Once you're in, enjoy the luxury, the calm, and the angelic waitstaff as they bring you to food heaven. Booking essential, the Scratch menu (made from avoided food waste) an especially good deal.
