"Omotenashi" is a Japanese concept that focuses on hospitality and mindfulness. It's a practice in which hosts greet their guests with the utmost standards of service and care, and it is following this culture that it is not customary to tip in Japan, where, in some cases, it might even be seen as rude.
Tokyo Diner is a great local spot operating since 1992, and came about when Richard Hills could not find the authentic Japanese food he originally fell in love with in the 80s. As he became immersed in Japanese culture, from the food to the language to the entire ambiance, he wanted to share it with this city.
Serving around 300 meals a day and with long queues filled with hungry customers, you know Tokyo Diner is a diamond in the rough.
Everything we had was 11/10 and felt very authentic. As a big fan of Japanese cuisine, I cannot recommend this place enough. We shared small sides such as miso soup (each their own), spinach and broccoli entrees, chicken karaage, while leaving room for a main dish. My Chicken Katsu Don was spectacular, both crispy and juicy, rich and very flavorsome.
The staff speak both Japanese and English, and while the price per dish is a bit more than you would usually pay for, Tokyo Diner does not accept tips.
Make sure to visit this spot as I've been going again and again!
And remember... life is too short to die on an empty stomach — so make it count!
