I love a good English afternoon tea. That said, it's often too light on the sandwiches and too heavy on the sweets. At Tea Rose Garden, I can indulge myself with a plate of the best tea sandwiches this side of the Atlantic at a price that doesn't cause heart failure.
Tea Rose Garden is an oasis of genteel peace in the bustle of Old Town Pasadena. From the street, you wouldn't suspect the lovely garden atmosphere inside. There are fresh flowers on the table (some on the food too!) and their mismatched china just adds to the charm. It's popular for bridal showers, baby showers, and girlfriend get-togethers so Saturday and Sunday afternoons can be a bit hectic but if you drop in on a weekday, it's quiet and peaceful.
Fair warning for Brits and Anglophiles - the 'Devonshire cream' is not. I mean, it's cream, but it's not the thicker-than-butter clotted cream you find in England. Still, it pairs delightfully with the fresh fruit arranged on top of it. You're not going to mistake it for the real thing when spread on your scone, but it's still pretty good. And, let's face it, clotted cream isn't easy to come by in Southern California.
I prefer my scones a bit crispy, rather than doughy, so I've learned to pass on them and save my calories for a creme brulee bite!
With over 50 varieties of tea offered, Rose Tea Garden is a great place to get your dose of Vitamin Tea!
"Jackson Market and Deli" in LA has a secret garden with a large gazebo & pizza oven out back. If I lived close by, I'd definitely stop cooking altogether!

"Pitchoun" Los Angeles is a Parisian-style bakery in Downtown that makes my favorite chocolate eclairs. Did you know that Chinatown used to be Frenchtown?
